Dear Eva,

I cannot stop wondering where you get the information for your articles. Is it you impression on things? If yes, may be it should be stated! I do recommend my friends to read the articles on this site but two articles I read today cannot be claimed to portrait "the real USSR". Everyone has a right to have an opinion as long as it is stated clearly that this is just the opinion of a particular person. I know it sounds bitter, but I guess I have a right for an opinion too:)

Regards,
RAks

Dear Milyimoi,

First things first, the article portraits a general picture for the period of time from 1960s to early 1980s. It might not necessarily include Moscow, it being the capital and the host for the Olympic Games - I imagine the situation with going out could have been a bit better there; but regular large cities - say, Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk, Vladivostok - most certainly.

Next, nowhere in this article I say that those discotheques were not lively nor full of energy: I did say that they were a nice finish for the week, which does not by any means imply a "cemetery". As for drugs, I think they were impossible to lay hands on back in the USSR.

As for the shortage of men, it was a terrible thing and yes indeed we (every family) are very unlucky the USSR happened to take the full blow of it. However horrible, life had to go on - and if the single sex dances parties were a side effect, then be it - but at least there were dances! By no means I amt trying to minimise the evil and the tragedy the USSR lived through, all I say in the post is that it was another characteristics of those times. Not to mention it would have been unfair - my Grandmother, born in 1932, still remembers those same-sex dances with fondness, and in this article I mean no pejorative sense, truly.

Finally, the last paragraph in you comment is very kind and makes me remember those good old days - but by no means I am trying to make those go away - quite the contrary, I thought my post was to reinforce the days long gone to stay in our hearts for longer. This blog is "lifting the Iron Curtain", but it is not replacing what was behind it. Sorry if I offended. Eva

What era is this article talking about? 40-s and 50-s? Cause in the 60-s people already danced however they wanted, and in the 80-s my brother went to discotheques. A lot of times things are blown out of proportion when it comes to Soviet Union. Yes, there were officials and rules, but there were people, regular people, and most of the time they didn't care about officials and rules and those discotheques were lively and full of energy without drugs and alcohol unlike it was here in the West.
And the shortage of men this article is talking about was due to Russia loosing 20, 000, 000 people in the second world war fighting Germany, and giving their lives not to only protect their own country but free the world of a terrible evil. And yes, there was no family I knew that wouldn't be missing a grandfather, whether he died of war or shortly after of war wounds. And now everyone is an expert of how it was in Soviet Union, and the world celebrates the victory of the Second World War keeping Russia out as though we had nothing to do with it, but talks about how it was in Soviet Union. I'll tell you how it was: it was innocent, beautiful, we fought the evil ones that tried to rule our lives, we read books all the time, talked about it, drank at house parties, listened to music, and had meaningful conversations in our kitchens, and when we got together as family and friends, all ages involved we knew how not to complain but have a great time, can any of you beat that?
