In the past I have owned both a 2109 Samara and a 2121 Niva, and thoroughly enjoyed both vehicles, especially in our Canadian winters. I really miss having them...

These cars were indeed good. Almost all of them except ZAZ are still manufactured although the assembly quality nowadays goes in no comparison with the former one up until 1985. The VAZ family from 2101 to 2107 is called "Classic". Currently 2104, 2105 and 2107 are manufactured (I own the latter one). Many 2101s made in 1970s are still running and looking as if they are right off the plant. It was an incredibly durable and reliable car almost impossible to break or kill. However as the time was passing and new models were introduced the assembly and spare parts quality began to fall down. Now "Classic" is some kind of a nightmare for a regular driver. The engine, suspension and transmission are generally reliable enough but all the other stuff breaks constantly. Let alone the body that is incredibly prone to corrosion. The price for a new 2107 is about 6000$ (totally not worth it!) while a five year old one can be bought for as little as 1000$. Of course the good thing is that virtually everything in this car really can be repaired with your own hands in the garage as it is as simple as a boot.
2108-21099 (which inner design (save for transmission) was copied from Volvo 340 series) are among the most popular models and 3000$-4000$ for a 2-3 year old one is a very fair price. Also there is a whole lot of sport spare parts and tuning options for these cars unavailible for older models which also makes them a perfect low budget choice for streetracers.
IZH car plant is now closed and makes only spare parts. The quality of IZH cars has been so low that their production has had to be cancelled. I can't remember anything worse than IZH Oda made by anyone in the past 30 years (maybe only Yugoslavian "Yugo").
