Till Gorbachov came indeed, even though he was only finishing what was started by the Party.

I presume you read Russian? Now the Armenian cognac is got to go, too.

http://www.gastronom.ru/news.aspx?id=101511

Many types of grapes were unique indeed. In Western Europe in the 19th century a lot of grapes were cross-bred in order to increase their resisitance to insects inoirted froim overseas (mainly from colonies or Americas). The Black Sea varieties (not being exposed to such maladies) on the whole remained the way they used to be for centuries. Till Gorbachev came....

It was interesting to read in Gorbachev's memoirs how the soviet system of whispers and resentment led a request at the top for scaled back production of alcohol to rip-up-the-vinyards by the time it got to the bottom. The grape varieties used in the former USSR were often unique to the region and not used around the rest of the world. A lost opportunity to capitalise on the better products even now. Had there been a stronger industry I suspect the better product would simply have been exported reducing the stock on the shelf rather than destroying it as it was.
